ROCKY BEACH WITH NEARBY
PETROGLYPHS AND TIDEPOOLS
Tide Pools
Explore tidepools as you walk along the shore, see a microcosm of ocean life living in the crevices of the lava rock
Sea Turtles
Holoholokai Beach is a favorite spot for sea turtles at sunset. Look carefully, as they can blend in quite well with the rocky beach
Puako Petroglyphs
Beside the trailhead for the Puako petroglyphs, a huge collection of ancient stone etchings.
Holoholokai Beach Park consists of a rocky coastline, made up of black lava and white coral, and is a perfect place to find sea turtles at sunset! Enjoy a walk down the beach, watch surfers catching the waves, and see what is living inside the tidepools. The rocky outcroppings and high surf makes this beach unideal for swimming, and can be dangerous even for strong swimmers.
This beach is close to our homes in the Mauna Lani Resort. There is a grassy area at the head of the beach with picnic tables, BBQ grills, restrooms, showers and plenty of shade. You’ll also find the trailhead for the Puako Petroglyphs here. There you’ll find the largest collection of petroglyphs in Hawaii, with more than 3000 of these ancient pictures etched into the boulders.
DIRECTIONS
To get to Holoholokai Beach Park exit Highway 19 in the direction of the Mauna Lani Resort. Take the first exit on the roundabout towards the Villages community and continue along N Kaniku Drive a little over half a mile. Turn right onto Holoholokai Beach Park Rd and drive to the end of the road to find the parking area, Puako petroglyph trailhead and the beachhead.
