THE ONLY BLACK SAND BEACH ON THE KOHALA COAST!
Created when molten lava meets the ocean, black sand beaches are a sight you won’t see many other places in the world. 49 Black Sand Beach is the only black sand beach on the Kohala Coast, and it’s quite accessible. The parking lot has restrooms and showers and is located just a minute away from the beach.
If you are spending the day at 49 Black Sand Beach, you can check out some of the local marine life by exploring tide pools (careful of sharp lava rocks!) and snorkeling. If you are lucky, you might see some Hawaiian green sea turtles basking on the hot black sand.
Make sure to check out this stunning black sand beach just minutes away from our legal vacation rentals in Mauna Lani. But when you go be careful as the black sand really absorbs the Hawaii sun – make sure to bring your sandals!
DIRECTIONS
To get to 49 Black Sand Beach exit Highway 19 in the direction of the Mauna Lani Resort. Take the third exit on the roundabout towards the Beach Club and continue for half a mile. The entrance to the beach is on the left. Visitors are required to stop at the guard shack and request a beach place. There are a limited number of beach passes so it’s best to arrive in the morning.
We recommend contacting organisations directly to get the most up to date information about their operations.
